THIS DATE IN HISTORY: 63 yrs ago today, Gracie vs. Kimura - October 23, 1951 (MaracanĂŁ Stadium - Rio de Janeiro, Brasil)

63 years ago today on October 23, 1951, Helio Gracie faced Masahiko Kimura who outweighed him by nearly 80 lbs. The match took place in the MaracanĂŁ Stadium at Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. It was the first time that a jiu-jitsu world championship match would be held outside of Japan. Kimura was so confident of victory that he declared that if Helio could last for more than 3 minutes, he should be declared the winner. After 13 minutes, Kimura caught Helio in the shoulder lock that, today, bears Kimura's name. Helio wouldn't tap, so Carlos Gracie threw in the towel forfeiting the match to the Japanese giant. His loss to Kimura was consider one of the greatest victories of Helio Gracie's career.

    Enjoy this historic match!

    THE WISDOM OF ... Carlos Gracie Sr. (September 14, 1902 – October 7, 1994)

Carlos Gracie Sr. passed away 20 years ago on this date of Oct 7 in 1994. He was the co-creator of Gracie Jiu-jitsu along with his brother Helio Gracie (although there is some contention as to who really created Gracie Jiu-jitsu), as well the creator of The Gracie Diet.

This post will serve as a "In Memory of ..." as well as "The Wisdom of ..."

12 Commandments of Jiu-jitsu by Carlos Gracie Sr.

    1. Be so strong that nothing can disturb the peace of your mind.
    2. Talk to all people about happiness, health, and prosperity.
    3. Give to all your friends the feeling of being valued.
    4. Look at things by the enlightened point of view and update your optimism on reality.
    5. Think only about the best, work only for the best, and always expect the best.
    6. Be as just and enthusiastic about others victories as you are with yours.
    7. Forget about past mistakes and focus your energy on the victories of tomorrow.
    8. Always make those around you happy and keep a smile to all people who talk to you.
    9. Apply the largest amount of your time on self-improvement and no time in criticizing others.
    10. Be big enough so you can feel unsatisfied, be noble enough so you can feel anger, be strong enough so you can feel fear, and be happy enough so you can feel frustrations.
    11. Hold a good opinion about your self and communicate that to the world, but not through dissonant words but through good works.
    12. Believe strongly that the world is in your side, as long as you stay loyal to the best of yourself.

These 12 Commandments were not meant for just Sport but as a Way of Life.

"Gracie Torrance - my experience training there" by jkd_guy

    Excerpted from Underground's BJJGround:

Thanks to "12", I was able to get a free month of training at Gracie Torrance. (but due to work, only went to about 6 classes)
One of the instructor's there is actually 12's son. Only had 1 class with him, but he was a cool, funny guy who knew his stuff.

First off, a basic intro on the curriculum of the school.

There are 4 types of classes:

    • Gracie Combatives (beginner class/gi only)
    • Master Cycle (blue and up)
    • Bully Proof (kids class)
    • Women Empowered (women’s class)

As a white belt, I only attended the Gracie Combatives class.
The curriculum is broken down into 23 lessons/classes.
    Each class contains 2 moves:

    • Standup move – such as getting the clinch, a takedown, etc
    • Ground move – either a submission move (armbar, armericana) or a positional move (passing guard, mount escape)

I've been to a number of different BJJ schools throughout the US, such as Renzo's, place in Atlanta, etc...

All those schools had the same format - one hour class:
    • 10 minute of warmups - situps, shrimping, jumping jacks, etc...
    • sometimes they have 5 minutes of takedown practice
    • technique 1 - work with partner on it
    • technique 2 - work with partner on it
    • last 20-30 minutes of rolling

Gracie Torrance was a different format:
    • 15 minutes of practice of previous class (half on standup move, half on ground move)
    • Then Everyone lines up against the wall
    • Then the instructor goes over move 1, and then asks everyone who has taken the class before to step forward.
    • He then tells the people who stepped forward to pick someone still standing against the wall as their partner for the class
    • Everyone does move 1
    • Instructor then goes over move 2 (ground move)
    • Everyone does it – instructor gives a variation on the move (i.e. mount escape if someone is holding your collar, then if the guy has his arm around your head, etc…)
    • After everyone does move 2, that’s about the end of the class (one hour)

After you attend X number (I don’t remember the number) of the beginner class, then you can attend the Friday beginner class, which (I believe) starts to chain together the moves, rather than doing each move in a silo.

So its pretty similar to other BJJ places, except no rolling.
That’s done in the Master Cycle class.

That difference is the biggest difference and I think most ppl will be split in their feelings on it.
Some people will think: “This SUCKS, I want to ROLL!!”
Other might be like: “Cool, I can learn my moves without someone going crazy trying to submit me”

In my opinion, I think their format is better for a total newbie - how often does a beginner who only knows 2 moves has a worthless rolling session where he's just a training dummy.
Their method allows someone to train for a month or two before they go to the Friday class and start chaining the moves together, then after 6 months or so, once they have done all the classes/moves 3 times or more, they start rolling.

As for the people there, everyone I met was very nice and friendly.
In the class, there is an instructor and an assistant instructor, but then there were one or two high belt people walking around to give pointers.

No egos, other schools I went to, there were a bit more egos, a bit more “I want to crush you” while rolling and even while drilling (not everyone at those schools, one or two folks)

Overall it’s a school I definitely would like to attend, but unfortunately due to work I cannot sign a year contract, and the monthly price without a contract is too high for me.

But I do recommend others go, they have a trial membership - free 10 day trial and they give you a gi. If you sign up after the 10 days, you keep the gi, otherwise you return the gi and thats it.

that about sums it up,thank you for giving it a try.have a nice day

    jkd_guy posted:

One thing I forgot to mention, every month they print out the schedule for the month.
    i.e.
    9/15 class is class #5
    9/16 - class 6
9/17 - class 7.....this way you know exactly what will be taught that day if you want to review before class, or if you miss class you know what they covered that day, etc...

Catchwrestler Josh Barnett submits BJJ Black Belt Dean Lister at Metamoris 4 (GIF Highlights)

Metamoris is a promotion founded by Ralek Gracie, son of Rorion Gracie and nephew of Rickson, Royce, and Royler Gracie. Metamoris features bouts between the World's Best Grapplers.

    The rules are simple:

    • 20 minutes only
    • Submission only
    • If no submission, match declared a Draw

Josh Barnett dedicated his match to Antonio Inoki. He wore black speedos, black wrestling shoes, white socks with the Japanese flag. His towel had a poem written by Inoki. EDIT 8/20/14 - Thank you to Jay Grooms for reminding me that Josh Barnett also dedicated this match to Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson. Thought I had included them, but I now see I didn't. Focused on what Josh wore and his dedication to Inoki for it. END EDIT

Josh, representing Catchwrestling (aka Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling) faced Dean Lister, a multiple winner of ADCC, BJJ Black Belt and undefeated in submission grappling in 16 or 17 years!! Dean had no easy opponent in Josh, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. The match featured different grappling philosophies facing off - Catchwrestling vs BJJ. What was awesome was the Respect shown after the match!

I made 10 animated GIF highlights from the bout.  Enjoy!

    An armlock attempt

Catchwrestling has a nastiness about it. I mean it in a good way. Check out the armlock attempt WHILE also getting a Head Scissors!

Remember the nastiness I mentioned? Check out this Knee on Face!

Ah, to be the referee Chris Haueter! Wonder what the Boogeyman and the Warmaster were yapping about?

It seemed like Josh was incredulous that Dean gave him a leg easily to leglock! At one point, it looks like Josh LOL's! He looked like he was going to go for a leglock but changed his mind. Bet you Dean said, "Come on Josh, I dare you! Go for the Heelhook!" and Josh replies, "Are you serious?" LOL

    Here we go: the Submission!

    Nice tat!

    RESPECT!

    REPLAY!

Rickson Gracie vs Eddie Bravo!! (OK, not really :-)

Sorry for the misleading title LOL @ me. Rickson Gracie vs Eddie Bravo would have been an EPIC match if it ever happened.

Instead, this is a video of Eddie Bravo explaining the Rubber Guard to Rickson!

Eddie was talking a mile a minute! Either he's excited to be talking to Rickson, one of the living legends of BJJ or perhaps it's because what he's talking about is something near and dear to his heart. He's passionate about the Rubber Guard because he created it and is happy to be teaching/explaining it. He truly believes in it and the passion flow through and is pretty evident in this video.

Rickson is a True Warrior/Martial Artist with an Open Mind ... living... adapting... he seemed reserved. Not sure if it was like anyone else seeing something being taught them by a master practitioner for the first time and he is soaking it all in, didn't have time to 'digest' it yet. Perhaps, he didn't want to say anything either yea/nay about the Rubber Guard until he had time to analyze it a bit more.

NOTE: I had scheduled this entry to publish, when I came across this from The Great Rickson Gracie by Eddie Bravo (bolded text my emphasis):

    "[SNIP]

Sitting there for 3 hours listening to him tell those old street fighting stories gave my brain the chills. This was a dream of mine ever since I began my Jiu Jitsu journey 20 years ago. I actually never thought it would actually come true, even in recent years. Rickson just seemed to yoda like, too mysterious, too out of reach, like getting to hang out with Mohammed Ali or Michael Jordan. Like that would ever happen, right? But BOOM! It happened, and all of a sudden Joe and I were having a conversation with this enigmatic martial arts icon.

And just like that 3 hours flashed by and it was over. I swear I could’ve gone 10 hours, EASILY. But it was over and it was time to go. As we were walking out of the studio into the front waiting room I thought to myself, maybe I could show him the rubber guard really quick?? Or maybe he’s in a hurry to get somewhere and he simply wouldn’t have enough time?? F*ck it I said, I’m gonna give it a shot. Getting to show Rickson what my students and I have been working on the last 10 years would be insane. I didn’t know how much time he would actually give me so I felt my pitch would have to be machine gun like, I had to make as many vital points as possible before he said, “I’d love to see more but I got to be somewhere”. So I rattled off my rubber guard speech faster than ever, like those disclaimers at the end of Nissan commercials. I was sweating, out of breath, while inside I was thinking “Is this really Rickson Graice inside my rubber guard or am I on 25 grams of Ecuadorian mushrooms?!?!” I am very confident about my Jiu Jitsu philosophy, plus I just hung out with him for 3 hours but I was still obviously a little nervous to be showing this Jiu Jitsu god some 10th Planet material. I just had to get all the rubber guard scenarios out before he left which could have been at any moment. It was like Eminem on a gallon of Cave Man coffee, no cream, black like Charlie Murphy’s anus but with no rhymes. I couldn’t help it, I just had to let him see what we’ve been working on the last 10 years, especially since he, Jean Jacques and Renzo were the catalyst to it all.

When it was all said and done, Rickson, Joe and I took some pictures and just like that, he left. Whether or not Rickson was impressed with the rubber guard, doesn’t really matter, it wasn’t about that anyways, it was about picking his brain, getting them old legendary stories straight from him, hearing his philosophies on modern Mma and listening to him break down life, honor, courage, conformity and spirituality. God bless Rickson."

OK ... ready for the video? Enjoy!

THE WISDOM OF ... Renzo Gracie

    "Yesssss leaving now...."

"My heart fills with the noble feeling that if I die tomorrow the world is in great hands. In a much better hands than mine."
    ~Renzo Gracie

Renzo Gracie, BJJ/MMA legend, is very active on Twitter. He tweeted a beautiful and awesome story of his experience while waiting for a delayed flight at an airport! Truly heartwarming!! But there are lessons in his story ... not just one of Unconditional Love, not just giving of oneself and Listen to others, but also of the Warrior being in the Moment, of being Aware, able to Observe his environment. When most people would just be upset at the flight delay, the Gentleman and Warrior that Master Renzo Gracie is, turns the Negative experience to one that is Positive!

Enjoy this great story as well as the Wisdom/Lessons in it!

    Obrigado Mestre Renzo Gracie!!

    Renzo_Gracie_BJJ @RenzoGracieBJJ

I seat to grab a beer... Newark Airport, two beautiful ladies seat next to me. They just got married in Jersey, their happiness can be seen from 100 miles away. My plane is late, we talk for hours. They are from Sonoma, the wine capital of the USA, near San Francisco, the first place I came to in the US. They show me their wedding pictures, tell me their life history, 23 years in the making. I ask about their family, what they think, how they see it. Every answer is positive, and great, they accept.
Time for my plane to leave. I got to go. I give them a copy of The Gracies and the Birth of Vale Tudo. And tell them what I do.

They give me a tight hug. In a way that they would only hug those who back them up. Tears fill my eyes. I wish them an amazing life. And an unforgettable love story, one forged with amazing memories - the most valuable asset a human can have on his life time.

As I walk to my gate my eyes glance to another amazing scene... A woman talking to her friend through an iPhone's FaceTime. She is talking through a sign language. With her hands. She is deaf. My heart fills with the noble feeling that if I die tomorrow the world is in great hands. In a much better hands than mine.

I sit here making stupid jokes and then read through @RenzoGracieBJJ time line and realize I need to do better.

    What a wonderful story! :)

    Happy 47th Birthday Renzo Gracie!!

Today marks the 47th birthday of one of the most popular MMA fighters as well as a MMA legend!

Posting 3 fights and a documentary in Renzo Gracie's honor!

    Parabens, feliz aniversario Renzo Gracie!!

Renzo Gracie vs Ben Spijkers (WCC 1: First Strike) (Oct 17, 1995)
    )

EDIT: My sincerest apologies to Renzo Gracie for posting this fight. In today's MMA, it may seem unsportsmanlike for a fighter to neck stomp his opponent when downed. But the story behind the fight and that neck stomp is as follows:

Spijkers and his friends had spent the entire previous night harassing Renzo, calling his room, sending room service to his room and taunting him on the press conference saying that Renzo´s eyes looked like the ones from his (Spijkers) girlfriend and that Spijkers was looking forward to doing something sexual to Renzo in the cage.

This was Renzo's first fight in the US and he took it very seriously. In Brazil, in a fight where someone seriously disrespected you or your family, it was symbolic to step on their neck after defeating them to show your contempt.

After the ref got on him and he heard the boos, he realized that he wasn't fighting in Brazil. Humbly, he apologized. Subsequent fights, Renzo helps his opponents up and is a total class act.

My sincerest apologies also to my friend Tommy H. who questioned my inclusion of this fight. I knew of the background story and neglected to add it for context of what appeared to be unsportsmanlike behavior. And hence my edit.

Renzo vs Oleg Taktarov (MARS I) (Nov 22, 1996)

Renzo vs Eugenio Tadeu (Sep 27, 1997) (Pentagon Combat)
Fans rioted and fight declared No Contest - one of the most famous fights ever in MMA history!

2005 ADCC Marcelo Garcia vs Ricco Rodriguez (Followup to Aubrey Marcus' What is a Warrior?)

Back on Feb 12, I posted a poem on Warriorhood, if you missed it, please check out:

My friend, Derek H., pm'd me via Facebook that day the following message. Posted with his kind permission:

    ...
I loved the Warrior Poet piece you just did. I've heard and read his stuff before. It's awesome.
The last line of that last poem always makes me think of ADCC 2005 Marcelo Garcia vs Ricco Rodriguez.

Marcelo fought and beat his Giant. It ALWAYS inspires me.
I think you should do a follow up using this fight as visualization.

I thought that it was a great idea!

The last line of this paragraph from Aubrey Marcus' "What is a Warrior?" is what Derek was referring to:

    " ...

A warrior fights for one reason alone: love. Love of life, love of what is good, love of family, love of tribe, and love of our infinite soul on the quest for impeccability. He lets love swell in his heart, flushing through every cell in his being until he cannot help but proclaim, like Cyrano De Bergerac, “I am going to be a storm -- a flame -- I need to fight whole armies alone. I have ten hearts! I have a hundred arms! I feel too strong to war with mortals. Bring me GIANTS!
    ”

My apologies to Derek on the delay in posting this followup!

This post dedicated to all the Warriors who have slayed their Giants as well as future Warriors who will slay their Giants; to Aubrey Marcus; to Marcelo Garcia and last but definitely not least, to my friend Derek!

Enjoy this David vs Goliath fight where Marcelo Garcia slays his Giant to show the Warrior that he is!

Have you slain any Giants lately? What are you waiting for?!?!

    Frog-jitsu!! Frog X Snake!!

My friend, Armando Basulto, a North Carolina-based BJJ Black Belt under Royler Gracie, posted to his school's Facebook Page, the following vid and commentary of a snake looking to make a meal of a frog:

    Jiu Jitsu Frog vs Snake:

We can see many principles of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in this short clip.

    1. Always turn towards your opponent,
    2. Always look to take the back from every position
    3. Brazilians will watch ANY fight and try to learn from it.

    Was that awesome or what?
